Meade Natural Heritage Association

Per Gary Hornbaker, MNHA President:

Due extraordinary circumstances of the heart the February monthly meeting has been changed from February 14th to February 16th, 6:30pm.  Thanks

The refuge and MNHA have been busily discussing and refining some new rules and regulations for the upcoming Spring Turkey Season.  In an email by Brad Knudsen, Refuge Manager, the changes to the turkey lottery were outlined.  Letters for those lucky permit holders who have been randomly selected to participate in the hunt are expected to be mailed out in early March.

The following are the new changes to the Turkey Lottery Rules and Regulations:

1)  We will allow hunters to SWITCH zones for which they were drawn on the MORNING of the hunt only - and only if mutually agreeable to each hunting party.  It is IMPERATIVE that refuge law enforcement be made aware if a zone switch occurs.

2)  Alternate and standby hunters will be allowed to wait at the hunting control station on the mornings of the hunts.  If a primary hunter does not show for the hunt, then the alternate may go in his/her place.  If there are no alternates present, then a standby hunter will be allowed to go, providing they have all appropriate permits, licenses, etc. already completed.

3)  If a bird is harvested before 10AM on any hunt day, an alternate or standby hunter will be allowed to go in that vacated zone for the remainder of the morning.

**On Mondays, any class of hunter can go in any vacated zone after 10AM (a disabled could go in a general or a general could go in a disabled area, for instance).

**On Saturdays, a youth will only be allowed to go in for a youth hunter.

4)  Primary hunters are drawn only ONCE for each class of hunter (youth, mobility, disabled, general).

5)  Legal gobblers are considered any bearded turkey as in accordance with Maryland state law.

6)  We will not pursue Wednesday morning hunts this coming Spring, since NSA range schedules are locked in already for 2012.  It is something we will consider as part of our Comprehensive Conservation Planning process.
